Meet the Winner of the 2024-2025 Investintech-CAJ Journalism Scholarship!

Discover the winner of the sixth annual Investintech-CAJ Journalism Scholarship prize for 2024-2025.

Each year, as our journalism scholarship concludes, we’re continually inspired by the caliber of data-driven stories submitted.

The quality of work from college and university students keeps reaching new heights, and so it comes as no surprise that we’re excited about this year’s latest pool of talent.

After carefully reviewing all eligible submissions, our Selection Jury has chosen the recipient of the sixth annual Investintech-CAJ Journalism Scholarship.

We’re excited to announce this year’s winning recipient is:

Hope Lompe

Congratulations, Hope!

Hope is in her final semester, completing a Bachelor of Journalism degree with a minor in political science at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), while working as the news reporter for The Runner, KPU’s student newspaper.

She’s also earned recognition as a recipient of the 2024 Jack Webster Student Journalism Award and received a KPU Journalism and Communications departmental award for her commitment to climate change reporting. She has also worked with Canada’s National Observer where her work was shared in publications such as CBC, Vancouver Sun, Times Colonist and more.

Her winning submission takes an investigative look at Canada’s forestry sector that has seen a rise in temporary foreign workers since 2021. Through a combination of public data from IRCC, Excel pivot tables, Datawrapper, analysis, and interviews, Hope was able to expose and trace the hiring trend back to 2021 due to relaxed federal hiring rules in Canada’s forestry sector that is normally made up of domestic workers.

You can check out her winning submission on our Scholarship Winners page.

Hope, our 2024–2025 scholarship winner, will receive $1,000 CAD toward her tuition, a complimentary CAJ membership for one year, and a pass to the CAJ National Annual Conference in Calgary from May 30–31st!

We’re grateful to our incredible partners whose support makes this opportunity possible year after year.

First, we’d like to thank the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ). Their partnership in with us has instrumental in supporting this scholarship and journalism students across Canada. We’re grateful to have continued our partnership with them for a sixth year.

A huge thank you to every student who submitted an entry! Your creativity and drive are truly inspiring. We hope you continue to hone your skills and apply again next year—we can’t wait to see more of your incredible data journalism!

Whether you entered this year or plan to, your work towards a career in journalism has certainly caught our eye. We encourage you to continue developing your skills and to apply again next year to showcase your growing skillset!
